These past couple of weeks, we've seen big developments in agentic AI news, with Stripe's near-complete acquisition of OpenRouter, an API gateway to over 400 AI models, and Amazon announcing the widespread availability of its Bedrock AgentCore payment functionality.
In addition, industry reports show that the majority of the financial services ecosystem is rallying behind the use of FedNow for global payments, a development that seeks to support a more efficient international payment infrastructure.

1. Stripe Acquires OpenRouter for $7B+, Turning Model Routing Into a Payments Infrastructure Problem (Yahoo Finance)
Citing a Bloomberg report, Yahoo Finance indicated that Stripe has finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter for $7B, marking Stripe's largest acquisition to date. According to the report, "the deal signals a major shift in how financial services providers are positioning themselves within the AI ecosystem."
OpenRouter offers an API gateway to over 400 AI models through a single interface. Leveraging that infrastructure, "Stripe is creating a closed-loop system for AI-driven commerce," according to the report.
In addition, because 46% of U.S. enterprise token usage on OpenRouter comes from Chinese-origin models, according to a CNBC investigation, regulatory and compliance challenges may face Stripe as it seeks to implement the infrastructure. (Read more.)
2. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore payments is now generally available: Enabling agents to transact safely and autonomously at scale (AWS blog)
As AI agents become more of a reality for businesses, Amazon is enabling their automation. The tech giant launched Amazon Bedrock AgentCore payments, fueled by Stripe and Coinbase, and enabling AI agents to autonomously pay for data and APIs.
"Today, we are happy to announce that this service is generally available, enabling enterprises to power agentic payments with security, guardrails, and observability for production workloads," reports the AWS blog. (Read more.)
3. FedNow extension wins support (Banking Dive)
Responding to the Federal Reserve's request for comment on a proposal that would allow U.S. banks and credit unions to use intermediaries to transfer funds through the FedNow Service, top organizations, including The Clearing House, Stripe, Wise, Visa, and more, offered endorsements of the concept. While the responders provided deeper insights into ways they felt the Fed could best address interoperability and other issues, the overall sentiment was positive in support of a more efficient global payments system.
For example, Visa executive Andrew Neeson, wrote the following in the company's response, "These changes will help expand cross-border payments activity across a wider set of use cases, and provide payment providers additional choice with how and where they can route payments reliably, efficiently and more cost effectively."
